Despite their popularity, the chances of winning are very slim–there’s a much higher chance of being struck by lightning or becoming the next Bill Gates than being the winner of a large jackpot. For many people, however, the lure of big prizes makes playing the lottery tempting. In fact, one study found that 50 percent of Americans buy a ticket at least once a year, and the players are disproportionately lower-income, less educated, and nonwhite.<\/p>\n
Most states regulate the lottery and have a special division that oversees the business, including selecting and licensing retailers, training employees of lottery retail terminals to sell and redeem tickets, paying high-tier prizes, and verifying that lottery games are played according to the law.
