During the American Civil War, stud poker was introduced. This was followed by community card poker and split pot poker. In both, the cards are dealt face up, until the dealer is given the chance to shuffle.<\/p>\n
The highest hand wins the pot. The pot is the sum of all the bets made by all the players in one deal. This can be won by the highest card, the best three of a kind, or the best five of a kind. A flush is all the cards in the same suit. Besides the usual ranked cards, wild cards are also allowed in some games.<\/p>\n
The game is played in private homes and casinos. It is played with a standard pack of 52 cards, which are ranked from the Ace up.<\/p>\n
The player who makes the first bet is the “active player”. The rest of the players have to match the bet. When a player checks, he declines to make a bet. He will be called if another player raises the bet. He may also raise if he wants to stay in the game.<\/p>\n
The betting phase begins with the player to the left making a bet. He must bet enough to equal the number of chips the player before him put in. Then the turn passes to the next player.<\/p>\n
